Biography

Lutruwita artist.
she/her.

Born in Devonport in 1974, Monique grew up drawing inspiration from the natural world, shying away from people to play her guitar and write songs. Immersing herself in the undergrowth of the Tasmanian landscape with it’s oceans, rivers and mountains, she saw herself as a part of these wild places, informing her creativity. Her voice is other worldly. Her songs melodic with rock stylings.

Not one to conform, Monique has carved her own path in music. Currently working in wellbeing for emergency service and front line workers, she uses her understanding of art as a therapeutic tool for healing. From ARIA Awards during her emergence in 1996 & 1997, Monique wanted to move to a deeper self awareness and authentic self expression of her true heart. Subsequently, throughout her music career, Monique has worked with marginalised sectors of society as a music mentor, educator and songwriting facilitator, using the power of music and sound to heal, connect and shift consciousness.

Role model

2022 – Monique is currently a Wellbeing Support Officer for Emergency Services and frontline workers in Tasmania. She is working with Wellbeing Support management to design therapeutic arts programs for DPFEM. A recent photography exhibition ‘Lutrawita Behind the Scenes’ at the Sidespace Gallery raised 42k for the family of the late 1/C Constable and landscape photographer Samuel Allen.

Throughout her career Monique has worked as a freelance artist with organisations including Glenorchy Community Services where she played for the inmates at Risdon Prison as part of Mental Health Week 2018/2019. As a role model for young women, Monique worked in collaboration with Big hART’s Project O in NW Tasmania in 2019 facilitating music mentoring workshops. Also in 2019, Monique teamed up with The Richmond Fellowship and wrote a song with The Roadhouse Ravens for Homelessness Week.

Monique Brumby Clarence High School mentoring

Monique visited Clarence High School numerous times that year to collaborate on a song with a 12 year old student Orana, who had experienced homelessness. Their song received national publicity and drew important attention to the housing crisis for disenfranchised families and individuals living in Tasmania. Orana went on to receive the accolade of ‘Young Citizen of The Year’ at the Australia Day Awards in Sorell, Tasmania.

Monique sees social justice and community engagement work as vital to building bridges and to inspire and heal people and communities. This is the corner stone to why Monique writes music.
